This project envisioned a plaza that would serve as a place for people to gather and
learn about the history of Cane Hill. As well as for people to enjoy the beauty of
nature. The whole project is meant to be enjoyed over time.
As a means of emphasizing these goals the plaza is intentionally modern so that it
won't be confused with trying to mimic what Cane Hill was. It is meant to contrast the
rest of the site so that the history of Cane Hill is highlighted. The plaza is meant to be a
living building. To achieve this, the plaza is made of wood and has solar panels. Wood
has a low-thermal conductivity and makes it a more energy efficient building. Wood
also improves air quality. It has built-up foam roofs with gravel on top to make the plaza more ecological.
The building is open to create a seamless transition into the landscape. The main
gathering space of the plaza has the highest solid sealing, to create a sense of
being in a pavilion and for people to be able to gather with no problem no matter the weather.
The two interpretative spaces are meant to create the feeling of being in a porch,
enjoying the view and the sound of the creek.
